What does this say about us as a "civilized" society? We burn books like the upright New Englanders burned witches at Salem. Or like the firemen in Ray Bradbury's novel. Out of fear. Out of ignorance. Out of ignorant fear. Yes, we have lost much more than a beautiful house, a literary work, a bit of history. We have burned our souls.

Thanks for this, TJS. As a former US Army Infantryman, (enlisted then officer) I'm familiar with Columbus via Fort Benning. I wasn't aware of Saint Elmo, mansion or book.
